Staying Healthy in the Midst of Covid-19
How do we stay healthy in the midst of Covid-19?
I am not sure about you, but this thought crosses my mind all the time.
Here is what works for me:
Home Cooking: this is probably the most basic way to stay healthy is to cook your own food. And, by that, I don’t mean buying pre-made cans of soup and lean cuisine dinners…but actually taking the time to buy fresh, seasonal and local ingredients and seeing what can be done with them in the kitchen. Don’t be afraid to try and make a mess - cooking can be one of the most therapeutic and rewarding activities. It is an act of self love and self care.
Activity & Movement: if you are afraid of going to the gym during coivid, or feel unmotivated with home workouts, try to stay active with movement. A daily 30 minute morning or evening walk, 15-30 minutes of yoga or stretching, biking to the grocery store or around town, even jump rope or body weight exercises. Any kind of activity that is at least 30 minutes every day is bound to make a difference on your waist and your thighs. Consistency is key!
Vitamin C: vitamin C is an immunity life saver! It is best taken in its natural form. Eat an orange or a grapefruit, and/or drink lemon water in the morning to promote healthier digestion. If none are accessible, try the Vitamin C chewable tablets.
Connections: stay healthy by connecting with loved ones (friends, family, partner) in a safe manner. The physical and emotional connection we experience with other people can really nourish our heart and soul. When I lived in D.C., I picked up a beautiful dance called Kizomba. The connection dancers experience on the dance floor with Kizomba is profound. Sometimes we just need that connection point to give us a little fuel. Dancing during covid-19 can be challenging, but if you have a steady partner who is willing to try, i say go for it!
Breathing exercises & meditation: breathing exercises are a wonderful way to release tension, calm the mind and reduce anxiety. Coronavirus can do a number on our psyche - the isolation, frustration, fear, despair… that is a lot of emotions that we keep stagnant within the body. I found that pranayama, known as yogi breathing, really helped to clear the tension and calm my nerves.
